Gizmo of the Week: Critter Count

A helpful band of insects helps students learn multiplication in the Critter Count Gizmo. In the Gizmo, groups of bugs are arranged on leaves to demonstrate the meaning of multiplication. Students can modify the number of leaves and bugs that appear on the screen, then click “Count” to see how multiplication is related to repeated addition. When students click the “Array” button, the bugs are rearranged into a grid to represent another common depiction of multiplication. Topics like multiples, factors, and the commutative property are discussed in the lesson materials.
