Gizmo of the Week: Drug Dosage

When prescribing medication, what dosage is enough, and what dosage is too much? These questions are explored in the Drug Dosage Gizmo. In this Gizmo, students are responsible for providing treatment to a simulated patient. By monitoring patient feedback as well as the concentration of medicine within the body, students practice developing a dosage schedule for a variety of medication types.

In medical research, it is often a challenge to determine the ideal dosage of a drug or nutrient. Today, zinc is a topic of active research in the treatment of the common cold. Many studies have highlighted the treatment outcomes of zinc in doses much larger than the recommended dietary allowance. But too much zinc can cause zinc toxicity. The potential usefulness and harm of elevated dosages of zinc are the subject of ongoing research.
