Knowing math facts “helps hugely in fraction work and ratios”

“I have never had a class this proficient at this time of the year in all my 13 years of teaching math facts! Wonderful! They are very solid on the AIMSweb simple computation tests, particularly the multiplication facts included in the progress monitoring and benchmarks. Being familiar with facts helps them know instinctively which numbers are divisible by what. This helps hugely in fraction work and ratios. Today, for example, we were working on area and perimeter, and knowing math facts helped them know exactly how to create a polygon with a perimeter of 24. Those knowing 4 x 6 or 4 sides with 6 units in each–solved it quickly.”
