ExploreLearning Hosts VPTC Tech Tour
This Thursday, ExploreLearning was proud to host two groups of high school students participating in the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council’s Tech Tour. The goal of the Tech Tour is to expose local students to careers in technology.
After introductions and a brief history of the company, we showed off some of our favorite Gizmos, including Moon Phases, Chicken Genetics, and Doppler Shift. We then asked the students what kinds of people they would need to hire to start a company like ours. They quickly came up with some of the obvious positions: web designers, programmers, and salespeople; but also dug a little deeper for database architects, learning specialists, curriculum writers, QA testers, customer service, investors, accounting and legal positions. We wrapped things up by talking about some of the varied backgrounds of the people in our company, from designing tee-shirts to private detective. Not all of us came straight from the worlds of computers and education!
All in all it got the students thinking about some of the career opportunities available at a small company like ours, as well as the kinds of skills they need to achieve their own goals. We hope they enjoyed the visit as much as we did!
