Electrons and Northern Lights
Physicist James A. Van Allen passed away earlier this week. During his very long career he did a wealth of research in magnetospheric physics. The Van Allen belts were named after him in 1958.One of the highlights of this early research was the 1953 discovery of electrons believed to be the driving force behind the northern and southern lights.For more information go ahead and read the Wikipedia entry about his career.
